Chancellor Sebastian Kurz spoke on Sunday in the “ZiB2” about the new measures for the fall and the refugee crisis in Greece.
After the corona figures have risen massively, stricter measures will apply throughout Austria from Monday. Even though the hospitals are currently only slightly occupied and most of the infected are between 20 and 39 years old.
“We are definitely at the beginning of the second wave,” stressed Sebastian Kurz in “ZiB2”. In the last 14 days there has been a doubling of new infections. On Saturday more than 800 new infections were reported. The fact that there were “only” over 400 on Sunday was due to the fact that fewer tests were carried out during the weekend.
The Chancellor stressed that each one must not take the numbers lightly. Switzerland has already issued a travel warning for Vienna. “The fact that hospitals are not working to capacity is good, but we must remain vigilant,” said Kurz. There was also a massive increase in figures in the Czech Republic and Hungary. Israel announced a new lockdown, Daily News “Heute” reported.
“Next summer will be normal again, but this fall will be very hard,” the Chancellor said. At the moment the infections can still be traced, but the more they occur, the more difficult it will be.
He considers the traffic light system to be useful so that the population can assess the risk. Although only seven districts were switched from 94 to yellow, the mask obligation applies throughout Austria. “It is important that more masks are worn again and that we act more restrictively at events. Everyone should know which rules apply in Austria. If we react too late, we have to be even tougher,” Kurz defended.
People should be more careful, especially at private parties. These are considered the main source of infection. Most infected people are very young and show hardly any symptoms. “But if they eat through the infection, it can become dangerous.”
In addition to the Corona pandemic, refugees were also a major topic in “ZiB2” after the fire disaster on Moria. “I understand that one is affected when one sees the pictures and wants to help. The question is only how. It is always pretended that Austria does not accept anyone. This year alone, we have refused asylum to 3,700 children. We take in significantly more people than other countries,” Kurz emphasized.
He reiterated that Austria cannot take in everyone and continues to rely on local assistance. “We are currently building a quarter with sanitary facilities for 2,000 people. I think this is much more sustainable than taking in four to twelve children.
